FIVE men charged with breaking into a police officer’s home and stealing five cartons of beer have appeared in court.
Senior Magistrate Cosmas Bidar said the defendants lived at the Macgregor Barracks and were children of police officers.
They were Peter Yangapi from New Ireland, Komprino Gwand from East Sepik, Madi Aha from Milne Bay, Oscar Chanei and Charlie Sauto both from Manus.
The court was told that they broke into the house of policeman at the barracks in Nine-Mile, National Capital District, and stole five cartons of beer which were to be used as court exhibits.
After reading the charges to the five men in tok pisin, Bidar ordered the men not to interfere with police witnesses and not to consume any alcohol.
It was alleged that on June 29, the five men broke into the officer’s laundry room and took the five cartons of beer worth K600. The beer was confiscated during a police raid on shops selling liquor illegally.
Bidar said it was a fresh case which police needed time to investigate. The matter will return to court on Aug 4.
