The scheduled construction of new classrooms in five National Capital District schools is ready to start.

The primary schools are Koki, Kila Kila, St Francis, Kaugere and Daugo Primary on Fisherman’s Island.

AusAID awarded the building contracts to PNG Forest Products.

Member for Moresby South and Sports and National Events Minister Justin Tkatchenko said he wanted to see the construction of the classrooms completed by the year’s end.

The contract is for 10 buildings in NCD schools, each building containing four classrooms.

The contract has already been signed and the Physical Planning Board has given its approval but approval is yet to be made by the building board.

Tkatchenko said one thing that must be understood was that “these schools in NCD have never had any kind of massive infrastructure in the past 30 years”. “It is a short-term pain for long term gain,” he said.

Tkatchenko said he would like the classroom buildings to be completed at all schools by the end of this year.

He said that teaching staff at the five schools were cooperative.
