HOHOLA Flies celebrated the club’s 10th anniversary in the Port Moresby Rugby Football League with their A-grade side completing the double after they beat defending premiers Tarangau 10-6 yesterday.
Flies fullback and man-of-the-match Darren Anabe completed a dream season for the minor premiers which saw him intercept a pass and run 60m to score the winning try at the Oil Search National Football Stadium.
Flies opened the scoring through halfback Pokapen Pes who took two quick penalty goals to lead 4-0.
Tarangau responded 12 minutes later with halfback and Port Moresby Viper Simon Arana putting in a grubber kick for second-rower Andikson Yamason to score.
Arana ensured a successful conversion for Tarangau to lead 6-4 with the match turning into a tussle for possession following sloppy handling from both sides. Pes converted a third penalty for Flies to level the scores 6-all at halftime.
A quiet second half saw both teams unable to finish their sets with handling errors crippling their efforts in attack.
Anabe broke the deadlock in the 65th minute after intercepting a pass from Tarangau five-eighth Joel Gena with the lanky fullback sprinting away to score the winning try for his side.
“It’s a great feeling for me as a first-time coach in this division,” Flies head coach Jezreel Oyekana said.
“I’m just really happy for the game we played.
“We treated this week as an ordinary one.
“We wanted to keep it simple.
