THE Hohola Flies secured this year’s minor premiership of the Port Moresby Rugby Football League (POMRFL) in the A-grade division following a 14-10 win to dethrone competition leaders Dobo Warriors on Sunday.
The top-of-the table clash saw the second-placed Flies outmuscle Dobo for the minor title following a superb performance from halfback Pokapen Pes, who kicked three goals.
The opening half saw the Flies cross through centre Benson Dabire and front rower Sam Kambao with Pes converting both tries.
Dobo managed to stay in the game with Siune Tine and Bobby Akunai bagging four pointers, however, a missed conversion saw the Flies take a 12-10 at halftime.
Pes stepped up for his side with a lone penalty goal in the second half which was the only point of the second 40 minutes and saw the Flies jump to 19 points on the standings to claim the minor honours.
Dobo stayed in second place with 17 points while Brothers (16) and Tarangau (15) rounded out the top-four.
POMRFL match official and board member Manu Lofena told The National yesterday that the shortened time-frame for matches was a concern, however, a top-four draw for the A-grade finals would be confirmed. “It’s been an entertaining last round of the competition but we will go through the results again and put up the draws for the finals.
“We already have a format in place for the finals so now we will be confirming a final standings.”
Lofena said the final standings for the women’s and Under-20 divisions were already confirmed with the Paga Panthers (women) and Kone Storms (U20) claiming the minor premierships in their divisions.
