RESIDENTS of Kutubu block, on the fringes of Morata, in Port Moresby, had their homes and food gardens submerged in flood waters after heavy rain last week.
Spokesperson Roger Wilson said it happened every year during the Christmas and New Year period when the capital city experienced heavy rain.
He said a number of people had to stay with friends after flood waters entered their homes.
He said others had to scavenge for what was left in their gardens after the flood swept all food crops away.
He said already a number of children had been diagnosed with diarrhoea, typhoid and other water-borne sicknesses as a result of the extensive flooding.
Wilson said the residents in the area, which included Goilalas, Engans, Chimbus, Keremas and Morobeans, had been neglected by the city authorities despite their pleas to the NCDC for proper drainage in the area.
Wilson said the people did not need cash to better their lives.
They simply wanted the authority responsible and other concerned organisations to help them build proper drainage to control the flow of water from two nearby drains.
Roger said anyone wanting help the community could call him on 7669 6394 or Steven Samaro on 7622 7618.
