Flood relief committee set up
By TONY PALME
A DISASTER relief committee for Jiwaka was set up on Monday in the wake of the Mombol River flood that caused massive destruction last Saturday.
Provincial disaster coordinator John Kupul said provincial administrator Michael Wandil was chairman of that committee.
He said Wandil and his deputy provincial administrators, and district administrator for North Waghi John Kumie visited disaster sites on Monday.
“Our priority now is to provide food rations for the families that were displaced,” Kupul said.
“Starvation comes after disasters.
“We appeal to businesshouses, interested individuals and other charity organisations or sympathetic people to chip in with food and cash.” Kupul said some businessmen and individuals had volunteered to donate food.
The committee is comprised of representatives from the churches, health, LLGs, police and businesses.
More than 2000 people have lost gardens, houses, animals and properties. Two people were admitted at Kudjip Nazarene Hospital.
