FLOOD-Stricken Mekeo villagers in Central have been given relief food supplies by the provincial government.
A total of 2008 10kg bags of rice and 152 cartons of noodles were distributed to more 30 villages in the Kairuku district by the district administration staff and the two presidents of Kairuku and Mekeo/Kuni local-level governments and local police personnel in Bereina.
Kairuku district chief executive officer George Aminae said all food had been distributed except for Eboa, Waima Kore, Waima Aviara, Kivori Poe and Kivori Hereparu.
Aminae said Waima and Kivori villages would receive their food supplies as soon as the road condition improved.
Right now the road is inaccessible and their food supplies were stored away in containers at Bereina station.
“In reality, food distributed to the 32 villages is not sufficient for each household, but village and church leaders have done their best to distribute to every family in their respective communities and villages,” Aminae said.
Aminae thanked Red Cross PNG, Child Fund PNG, PSI and World Vision for support during disaster in Kairuku and also acknowledged respective non-governmental organisations for their efforts in distributing non-food items like buckets, mosquito nets, aqua tablets and other items.
