FLOODING of the Zogi River at the Meniharove section of the Nagamifa area in Goroka, Eastern Highlands on Monday washed away food gardens and cash crops.
Young community leader Pio Peter told The National yesterday that this was the result of the continuous rain since Jan in Goroka.
Peter said the river flooded on Monday causing landslides along the banks and washed away food gardens and cash crops that belonged to six families.
He said floods left deposits of sand and mud, plant debris and household waste from Goroka town on the garden land.
“These deposits have covered the food crops,” he said.
Peter said apart from the coffee, villagers grew other crops such as kaukau, taro, peanuts and bananas for their personal consumption as well as to sell at the market to earn some money for other necessities.
