Floods wreak havoc in ENB

THE majority of roads in East New Britain have been flooded since Sunday continuous heavy rain.
Police Minister and Gazelle MP Jelta Wong urged people in his electorate living near flood plains to protect their properties and to be alert.
He has been advised by the National Weather Bureau that heavy rain and windy conditions were expected to continue.
Wong urged commuters and residents to be careful when travelling as a hurricane was also expected to pass through New Ireland.
Wong was supposed to travel to Bougainville on Monday and so flew out of Port Moresby with the Australian High Commissioner.
However, when he learnt of the warnings for heavy rain and flooding in his electorate and other parts of East New Britain, he got off at Tokua Airport, apologised to the Australian High Commissioner that his people needed him and got on public transport from the airport into Kokopo town where he met with administrator Wilson Matava to see what he could do to assist disaster areas.
He said they were investigating reports of nearly 50 houses at Rapolo ward being swept to the shoreline by floods.
Gazelle is also facing a similar disaster, with the Kerevat Correctional Services facility being threatened by floods from the nearby Kerevat River.
The provincial disaster unit is going around collecting information on the affected parts of the province.
There are reports of roads being flooded and impassable at this time, with a number of landslips.
The disaster committee meeting was told to organise disaster relief funds.
