THE Flexible Open and Distance Education (FODE) is doing a lot to address illiteracy in the country, according to secretary for provincial services in the Department of Education Maxton Essy.
“If those who are left out of formal education register at FODE, then FODE is doing a lot to address illiteracy,” Essy said.
He made the comments on Monday following the  opening of a four-day workshop  in Port Moresby for FODE teachers and provincial coordinators to discuss on a new and aligned curriculum.
Essy encouraged the 22 provincial coordinators to continue to operate the centres despite many challenges.
“I was a FODE provincial coordinator at Chimbu and I understand some of the challenges faced like; late delivery of student and teacher material, students not handing assignments on time, and doing exams and assessment on time, but you are giving a second chance to people to continue school.
