THE Fongs dominate the newly selected national squad to take part in the 2013 Oceania Billiards and Snooker championships in Port Moresby next month.
The Papua New Guinea Billiards and Snooker Association yesterday announced the men’s and women’s teams.
The Fongs dominate with four new faces in the men’s team of 12, with another among the three reserves.
Two notable omissions from the men’s team are Lamana duo Yiannis Nicoloau and Arua Simoi, who withdrew because of work commitments.
“It is sad that they will not be participating because they are class and experienced players at this level but we do respect their decision,” association public relations officer John Chan said.
“They will however be assisting the teams whenever they can in their preparations.”
There are three debutants in the women’s team of eight, with two reserves.
Announcing the team yesterday, Chan said the players were selected on their training attendances and attitude.
“They have been training for the past three months and have shown commitment to play for PNG,” Chan said.
The men’s team is: Djorne Fong, Roger Ng, Peter Fong, Harry Fong, Brian Fong, Joseph Ng (debut), Poliap Pokanau (debut), Willie Vaieke, Noel Ramos, Stallone Fong (debut), Nathan Fong and Robin Charles (debut).
The reserves are Vani Toka and debutant youngsters Monty Fong and Miria David.
The women’s team comprises: Geua John, Damita Bray, Helen Samuel, Raka Rocky, Maggie Brown and first timers on the international scene Tanya Mossman–Tam, Wisina Chan and Jane Laigi.
Reserves are new faces Samariti Korimbo and Isabella Raka’ani.
Chan said depending on the number of nominations received from overseas, the reserves named had a chance to play.
The 2013 BSP Oceania Snooker Championships cues off in Port Moresby on March 14.
