AIR Niugini chief executive Simon Foo says the board and management will be investing in hangars to allow the maintenance of aircraft in the country.
He said it would save costs and help upskill local workers. Last year, the first Dash-8 aircraft check was done in Port Moresby.
Air Niugini expects another to be completed this year.
“This will reduce overseas expenditure as well as build the PNG engineering staff capacity,” Foo said.
He made the statement when welcoming 10 Air Niugini aircraft maintenance engineers who had completed their four-year training at the Air New Zealand Aviation Institute in Christchurch.
“The 10 are fortunate to be among those who will be using this facility and they are the future of Air Niugini,” Foo said. Foo said Air Niugini was working to improve and standardise its employment packages for pilots so that it could retain existing ones and attract new pilots.
