Food at new market stalls meet standards
The National, Tuesday July 7th, 2015
INFORMAL sector markets allocated by National Capital District Commission for use during the Games are for safety, health and hygiene purposes.
The informal markets are at Jack Pidik and opposite Unagi Oval.
NCDC chief health surveyor Isowa More said they wanted to make sure that all the food and items met health and hygiene standards and were also of quality.
“Food is a transmitter of diseases, and when contaminated, can cause harm to people such as food poisoning,” More said. “We are monitoring the vendors to ensure that vendors sell cooked food that meet health and hygiene standards. Handcrafts are allowed but counterfeit products, betel nut and smoke are restricted at the markets.
“We are doing this to encourage the informal sector (vendors) to take part in an orderly and formal sort of activity during the Games. There are portable toilets provided for people using the venues. Generally, the informal sector markets are up to health and hygiene standards, and the park and ride venue are safe and conducive.”
The NCDC team provided health and hygiene awareness through pamphlets and brochures, and tourism information and guides.
