Football needs stakeholder support

Letters

I APPRECIATE what John-Kapi Nato and PNG Football Association are doing to get football to next level in the country.
The PNGFA alone cannot do everything.
It needs the support of everyone, including the government and corporate sector, as what is happening to rugby league.
Provincial governments in some provinces such as in the Highlands region, are sponsoring their rugby league teams to take part in the Digicel cup competition with great support from cooperate organisations such as SP Brewery, Coca Cola, and Digicel.
That’s why rugby league has grown in popularity in the country and is claimed to be the number one sport.
Football was introduced in the country by the Germans over a hundred years ago, unlike other codes.
It was the first sport that was embraced and played everywhere in PNG during the colonial era, before other sports were introduced.
Like rugby league, football should get the same recognition and support from national and provincial governments, including the cooperate sector.
Now that PNGFA is proposing to introduce professional league in 2021, it will be good time for cooperate houses and provincial governments to get on board to sponsor teams to take part.
I call on the Momase region provincial governments and business houses to get behind to support and sponsor teams to take part in this proposed professional football league.
The two Sepik provinces are not doing anything to get the youths involve in sporting activities at the national level.
Remember, football is the number one and leading sport played in the Momase region.
So get behind and support to grow the code to the next level.
