TWO footbridges was commissioned on Monday at Leron-Wantoat local level government, Markham in Morobe by Markham MP Koni Iguan, accompanied by National Plannign Minister Sam Basil and Correctional Service Minister Chris Nangoi.
Iguan said the bridges were funded at the cost of K100,000 each by the district development authority to allow the people an easier means to cross fast flowing rivers in the LLG.
“Markham is not just the valley, it has almost half of its population living in the mountains who usually cross fast flowing rivers to have access to services. As their local MP, I have seen my people struggle when carrying their produce to markets in Lae and to bring in school materials and medicines and other services to their villages. While crossing those fast flowing rivers, mothers have drowned and some were left to die because they could not cross over those river, especially during labour.”
He said roads were a huge need for the people but at this stage, he could not bring that vital service to the people quickly. “This will take time so I had to provide an alternative in the meantime.”
