Forfeits the order of day one in MRDC 9s

FORFEITS were the order of the day in the Port Moresby MRDC Super 9s rugby league challenge held at the Lloyd Robson Oval yesterday.
Last year’s joint champions, Defence Gold started their campaign on an easy forfeit win against Brothers while Souths could not match the fired up Bishop Brothers Hawks Green going down 16-8.
Royals, Kone Storms, Seven Mile Jets and Dobo Warriors won easily on forefiets against Kiliwana, Morata Bullets, Southern Blacks and Kone Tigers respectively.
Some of the teams that were not available for the games were also ruled out including Bullets, Blacks and Kiliwana.
In other games played, Hekari Tarangau narrowly defeated Panthers 8-6 and Port Moresby Butterflies sneaked past Defence Green winning 8-6.
Kavo West also proved their worth f belting a new look Manus Eagles 22-4.
The main game between new kids on the block, POM Diwai and Hawks White was an evenly contested battle but Hawks had the last laugh winning 6-4.
Tournament coordinator Meke Maino said he would rework the orgiginal draws to come in line with PRL chairman Labi Amaiu’s directives to have all games played on Sunday and continue the following day with the finals.
“I wanted the games to be played on weekends only however, it is the chairman’s call to have the game today (Sunday) and tomorrow so we will continue with the games as per his (Amaiu’s) advice,” Maino said.
The teams are pooled in four pools with each team playing three games with the top team advancing to the quarter-finals.
The competition continues today with the first game to be played at 9am.
