FORMAL education will change the mindset and character of people in any society and community, a senior lecturer says.
Balob Teachers College senior lecturer Jazy Magia made the remarks during the opening of a new school in Nawaeb, Morobe, on Thursday.
Magia, who spoke on behalf of the provincial education division at Poasi Primary School’s opening at Musamung village, ward 13, Ahi local level government, said development came in many forms and school was one important development.
He said development started with the individual and this was achieved through formal education. Magia urged the community to look after the school and take responsibility for it.
Board chairman Timothy Kising said the school was established this year, with an enrollment of around 100 students for term one and has three teachers.
“As a former teacher, it was clear that the community needed a school,” Kising said. “It’s not only a school for the children, but its establishment will change the mindset of the people in the community to move forward with development and change with it (development).
“Education brings in the changes in the mindset of people and the community needs to change to see development in the community.”
He acknowledged the support from the community members and the head teacher Gasi Rongi for assisting in setting up the school.
Kising said the school was a Government school. Rongi said the school was built with support from its board members, landowners and her family, but had yet to receive government funding.
