former Central governor, Opa Taureka passed away at the Port Moresby General Hospital on Friday.
Provincial administrator Gei Raga said Taureka, 80, from Kapari village, died after suffering a mild stroke.
He had served only one term as governor.
Raga passed on his condolences to the family and offered the support of the provincial administration. He described Taureka as a very down to earth person who always had time for his people.
“He was a true family man and honest in all his dealings, both in his political and social life,” Raga said.
“The Central administration has taken care of all the funeral expenses, including food and transportation to the village for burial.”
Raga said they had allocated almost K20,000 towards the funeral expenses.
Meanwhile, Central Governor Kila Haoda also expressed his sympathies to the family.
“He was one of many great Central leaders who stood up for the greater cause for Central and we salute him for that,” he said.
