FORMER SP Hunter Gahuna Silas says he wants to prove critics wrong as he aims for a strong debut year with French club Saint Gaudens Bears in the Elite One competition.
The 28-year-old, from Baruni and Morobe, told The National yesterday that he was always hopeful of international opportunities despite being dropped by the Hunters in 2020.
Silas said the one-year stint in France would be his redemption.
“When the Hunters dropped me two years ago, I didn’t give up because I knew that God gave me this talent and that it would still take me somewhere,” he said. “I went back to the Digicel Cup and played for Rabaul Gurias and Central Dabaris.
“I kept working hard to improve my game because I had the dream to go play abroad and finally I have achieved my dream.
“I want to prove to the people who underestimated me that I can still play professional rugby league and achieve my dreams as long as I work hard.”
Silas said France was a non-English speaking country and that communication would be a barrier.
However, he said he was happy to take on the challenge.
“It’s a new environment and this is my first time to come to France and I know there will be challenges,” Silas said.
“But I’m sure I will do just fine.
“I’m happy for my countryman Kuni Minga who welcomed me at Saint Gaudens.
“Seeing him just gives me confidence.
“I can’t wait to get to know my new teammates and coaching staff.”
