IT is rare for a rugby league player in a village competition to receive K100 for man-of-the-match award.
Asi Iubu of Ioni Panthers of Baraka Rugby League competition in Barakau village in Central was the winner K100 last week after his splendid performance – courtesy of former PNG Kumul winger Robert Volu.
Volu was part of the team in 1996 under coach John Wagambie who lost to Australian Kangaroos 52-6 at Lloyd Robson Oval during the ARL/Super League war.
Volu is popular with Magani RFL and the Post Pumas RLC in his rugby league playing days.
In recent years, Volu picked up Kone Tigers and made them a formidable force in the tough Port Moresby RFL competition until recently.
He was unceremoniously dumped by the Enga faction of the club.
Volu, who grew up living and breathing rugby league, still has plenty to offer.
He is now sponsoring man-of-the-match at the Barakau rugby league competition.
