PNG Power is targeting commercial consumers through a series of workshops aimed at educating them on how to cut down electricity wastage.
The three workshops, the first of which was held yesterday in Lae, was part of “Promoting energy efficiency in the Pacific” programme sponsored by the Asian Development Bank in Papua New Guinea, the Cook Islands, Vanuatu, Samoa and Tonga.
It is implemented by the International Institute for Energy Conservation through PNG Power and largely educates the commercial consumers to conserve electricity.
Facilitator Dr Shahab Qureshi, an international consultant on energy efficiency, interacted with representatives of some major business houses in Lae including managers, architects, builders and engineers.
“The idea is to introduce to these technical people in the companies on how to reduce power energy and it starts with building designs, material, the controls or switches inside and the appliances being used,” he said.
“PNG is in the developing stage, its residential population is not electrified, commercial consumption is very large, in terms of energy efficiency consumption, the Pacific is lagging behind other regions,” Qureshi said.
