WOMEN in Lae will be able to commute safely in the city on the two new 25-seater buses donated by the Ginigoada Foundation Inc.
It is part of the foundation’s Meri Seif bus programme in Lae.
They were funded by the Government of Australia with support from the Papua New Guinea Government and UN Women.
General operations manager Philip Priestly said working women in Lae found it difficult to travel to and from work.
“The idea is to alleviate that problem,” he said.
“We realised that the core work of this country relies on women, and the service we offer is directed towards that.
“Women are targets of rascals and harassment, and we are trying to alleviate that.
“By having the Meri Safe Bus here, it’s a start which we want to build on to increase the safety of women and girls travelling around Lae City.
“There will be no males allowed on the buses.
“We have a female driver, a female bus crew and a male security in the buses.”
