CHILDREN at the Gateway Community Learning Centre in Erima Wildlife, Port Moresby, celebrated Christmas early after a PNG Foundation team visited them.

The Digicel staff presented them gifts to acknowledge their efforts and reward their performance.

The community learning centres are informal kindergartens in settlements and villages providing early childhood learning and development programmes for those between four and six.

There are 20 such centres in the National Capital District, Central and Gulf.

They will receive around 2000 gifts over three weeks by the Foundation.

The Erima centre has eight teachers and 120 students.

Teacher Margaret Kaupa said students came from as far as East Boroko.

The foundation has funded 450 classrooms, 10 libraries, 21 mobile health clinics, two rural health aid posts, three women’s resource centres, co-founded five family support centres in partnership with UNICEF and the National Department of Health, graduated 221 grassroots community based teachers in early childhood development and  learning.

Since the inception in October, 2008, the foundation has directly invested K45 million in Papua New Guinea’s rural, remote and marginalised communities across all 22 provinces, impacting more than  400,000 people.
