PEACE is fundamental in this country for prosperity and economic independence, according to WK Kiddie PNG Peace and Gutpela Sindaun Foundation.
Founder Watt Kiddie said without peace in local communities, people would experience tribal conflicts, would lack respect for each other and would be a security threat to business houses among other conflicts.
He noted that the security industry cost around K2 billion per annum.
“We need to be obedient to the law, let’s be peaceful,” Kiddie said.
He urged the public to join in celebrating the International Day of Peace (Peace Day) at Murray Barracks on Saturday.
Students at Bava International School in Port Moresby is one group that will observe the day.
School principal Boio Bess Daro said a lot of war and conflicts happening around the world including in PNG, were usually caused by selfishness and greed.
It’s important that we celebrate this day because there is a lot of wars everywhere,” Daro said.
“Usually, it’s created by selfishness and greed.
“Wars are created not because of power, but I truly believe it’s due to fear.”
Daro said 125 students from pre-school to grade four at Bava International School had various activities leading up to World Peace Day.
These included poem-writing, drawing and making placards for peace day.
“They call it peace day 193 because 20 years to Sept 21 this year, it will be when it was signed by 193 United Nation states – 20 years ago.”
Established in 1981 by an unanimous United Nations resolution, Peace Day provided a globally-shared date for all humanity to commit to peace above all differences and to contribute to building a culture of peace.
