ELEVEN schools in Hela, Southern Highlands, have received more than 10,000 library books and teaching materials from the Hela Rural Development Foundation (HRDF) to boost learning.
Founder Eric Yawas said the goal was to improve literacy and the quality of education.
The items donated were reading books, teachers reading materials, desks, tables, chairs, whiteboards, markers and clocks.
“We’ve donated to schools that do not have library books and children face difficulty with reading and speaking English,” he said.
“The standard remains the same like in the 1990s, or worse, due to rise in tribal conflicts and children leaving school in fear.”
Yawas said since the foundation’s establishment in 2019, it had assisted 34 remote schools, supported more than 15,000 children including the neighbouring Enga.
