FOUR of the 73 convicts who had escaped from Buimo jail, Lae, last month have been shot dead.
Northern command police commander Giossi Labi said this yesterday.
Mr Labi added that five others had been recaptured.
He said so far, police had charged a family for harbouring an escapee in their home.
Mr Labi continued to plead with residents of Madang and Morobe provinces, to help police by reporting any suspicious new faces in their area.
He appealed to all companies, especially airline and shipping operators,
to cooperate with the police and report any strangers who are travelling on a plane or boarding a ship.
He said although the police were on full alert, they had problems with shortage of manpower and funding.
Mr Labi warned people who harboured and aided escapees, to be aware that they were breaking the law.
He also urged companies to call for police escort to transfer cash to or from banks or elsewhere.
