AT least four people were killed and properties worth thousands of kina were destroyed at Laiagam in Enga in a clash between clans over illegal mining at Porgera, locals say.
The fight was between the Tombe and Tube clans.
The alleged killing took place on Tuesday.
Three men from Tombe were killed.
One from the Tube clan was also killed.
A local, who asked not to be named for security reasons, said the fight had started earlier this year.
He claimed that a man was killed in Laiagam at the residence of one of the prominent figures in the province who was from the Tombe clan.
He said members of the Tube clan asked the Tombe clan to pay compensation.
“Since it took a lot of time to pay compensation, the members of the Tube clan retaliated and attacked a young man from Tombe on Tuesday,”the source said.
“The fight got out of hand, resulting in four deaths and properties worth thousands destroyed at Lyong village.”
He said tribal fighting in Enga should be stopped because many lives and properties were affected.
The source said people should start changing their mindsets and look at better ways of living.
