FOUR new judges were officially welcomed onto the bench in a ceremonial sitting in Waigani last Friday.
Chief Justice Sir Salamo Injia, in his welcome speech, said the four new judges appointments brought the total number of permanent judges to 22, out of the current ceiling of 25 judges.
“This is the highest number of permanent judges since independence,” he said.
He said in the next 12 – 24 months, the judiciary would be looking to fill the remaining three vacant positions.
He said the new judges were not new to the legal profession and the civil service.
They all brought with them wide range of knowledge and experience in the practice of law, both in the private practice and public law practice, he said.
