FOUR provinces are yet to set up their own fire services, deputy Chief Fire officer Operations Bill Roo says.

The PNG Fire Service is preparing to have consultation with the four provinces.

They are Hela, Enga, Southern Highlands and Jiwaka.

“We have made appointments to consult with respective provincial governments to find a way to establish services in those places,” Roo said.

He said the Autonomous Region of Bougainville was the latest to sign a memorandum with the PNG Fire Service last Friday to set up an office in Buka.

He said they would consider recruiting Bougainvilleans to be firefighters.

Roo said the fire service had an important function in terms of protecting properties and lives.
