FOUR teams were named by the TNA Lions selection panel chaired by franchise owner Gerard Philip yesterday.
The squad comprises talented youngsters mostly from secondary schools and youths in Chimbu and will meet at the home of the Lions, Dickson Oval for a series of trials this month.
Formerly known as the Warriors, the Lions is a significant name that will change the entire perception of the name Warriors (read in next Friday’s weekender) strongly rooted in the culture of both the Angras (males) and Ambais (females).
“I do not want to talk about Warriors, as the people of Chimbu are not meant to be Warriors on the field of play,” Philip said.
“In the past this has on many occassions brought the Simbu Warriors games into disrepute due to spectator and player violence on and off the field.
“This is because of the name.
“Since we think that we are Warriors we cannot enjoy the game that we all love – rugby league.”
Philip has named four squads.
