FOUR students and a six-month-old baby died in a vehicle accident outside Malalau Station in Gulf on Saturday, Gulf police commander Inspector Silva Sika said.
Sika said a vehicle belonging to GMI Lodge in Gulf transporting cargo and passengers to Kerema was involved in the accident that killed the five. Ten others survived.
Sika said about 15 passengers were on board. The four who died were all males.
“It is the worst accident this year that should have been avoided if care was taken in driving,” he said.
He said the cause of the accident was only assumed – driving at a speed the driver was not able to negotiate a bend, ran off the road onto side of the drain and the
impact threw passengers and cargo out.
Sika said the students were returning to their village after a school sport activity at Malalau High School and got picked up by the vehicle.
