Free bus service continues indefinitely

The National, Tuesday 28th Febuary 2012

THE National Capital District Commission will continue to provide free bus services to students.
This service has not been halted.
Governor Powes Parkop has directed that the school pick-up be extended for an indefinite period.
One of the two buses had mechanical problems and is in the workshop for servicing so we have deployed a standby.
We currently service the two school routes using a yellow bus (BCO 413), which covers the route from Gerehu, Boroko, Town, Badihagwa, Koki, Manu, East Boroko while the second bus (BCW 180) covers the opposite route, therefore operating in opposite directions in the afternoon.
On the same note, we wish to inform the public that this free service cannot continue forever.
Thus, NCDC has commercialised the operation of all our buses in late 2011 and outsourced the management to the 14-mile Smash Doctor.
The manager has not secured approvals from the Department of Transport and ICCC and, therefore, we cannot impose fares on the commuters.
Pending this approval, Governor Parkop has instructed to extend the trial run at least until the necessary approvals have been obtained.
We have also commenced the extension of peak hour trial runs from late January 2012 for free.
The governor has also instructed the management to add a few more new buses within the next three months to the existing fleets.
Please understand we are not trying to provide alternate transport services in the city but only intervening to beat the peak hour rush and to assist students.
