Fresh deal helping New Islanders sell their fish

NEW Irelanders will be able to sell their fish as soon as they arrive with their catch, thanks to an agreement that will pave the way for a one-stop wholesale fish depot.
The New Ireland government’s business arm, New Ireland Development Corporation (NIDC), signed a joint venture agreement on Friday with Pamex Ltd and Commodity Management Partners Ltd (PCMP) to kick start the New Ireland seafood joint venture.
Panamex chief executive Arthur Jones said there was a demand for seafood from New Ireland in high-end markets overseas, but the problem had been providing a consistent supply.
“We will provide an opportunity for local fishermen to supply us with fish, crabs or crayfish by way of setting up seafood pickup points across New Ireland, which will be fully fitted with solar freezers and ice to keep the seafood fresh,” he said.
“We will also work on establishing a collection ship, which will visit the remote areas of the province on a regular schedule.
“This will encourage local fishermen to produce more catch and earn greater incomes.
“Overall, this venture will help ordinary islanders make money, contribute to the local economy while also creating healthy investment profit for our business.
“It’s a win-win for all stakeholders involved.”
Governor Sir Julius Chan said the road would not be smooth as the world markets were affected by supply and demand issues.
“We have world-class marine products, but these are tough times and we will only know it if we try,” he said.
The joint venture will also see improved market accessibility for cocoa and copra growers.
“As enshrined in the New Ireland declaration, primary industry is the future of New Ireland,” Sir Julius said.
“We will create and expand renewable industries that will provide our people with sustainable incomes and a high quality of life far into the future.”
He said this would be done by taking control of the fisheries industry, establishing downstream processing of fish products, increasing agricultural production, taking full control of the forestry industry, establishing downstream processing of forestry products and acquiring rundown plantations.
