FUEL in Wewak, East Sepik province, is running short and could run out by this week.
Yesterday, fuel retailers started to ration fuel, affecting businesses and motorists.
A source in Wewak told The National by phone last night that fuel was scarce and, as of yesterday, motorists were scrambling in search of fuel.
“There is an acute shortage of fuel in Wewak, and motorists and businesses will suffer in the next few days if nothing is done,” the source said.
Because of this, the price of fuel on the black market is rising sharply.
Attempts to get in touch with fuel distributor InterOil, and other major service providers to independently verify this was unsuccessful.
The cause of the imminent fuel shortage could not be ascertained.
