THREE schools in NCD celebrated the country’s 38th Independence on Friday. Ted Diro Primary School, Gerehu Secondary School and Jubilee Catholic School held cultural shows to commemorate the independence celebrations.
Boreboa Primary School, Kopkop College, Gordon’s International School and Gordon’s Secondary also had similar shows to with many city residents having many choices of locations to attend.
Gerehu Secondary had nearly all the traditional groups performing while the people that attended were kept alive by the performances.
According to board chairman of Gerehu Secondary, Pr William Poiya, the theme of the cultural show was “Inheriting culture through education”.
Poiya said students wanted to embrace their cultures because “our culture is slowly fading away”.
.hey hoped to host a bigger show next year.
“The school did have a negative image in the past but that is now something of the past. Such occasions have helped restore the pride and integrity of the school once more.”
Ted Diro Primary School Grade 5 teacher Sese Dika said that the independence celebration at their school was an ongoing tradition each year and that both the teachers and students dress up in PNG’s national colours and at the same time in traditional attire.
“Each provincial group is represented with traditional singsings and we normally have a parade around our school field to display our students’ traditional costumes and songs.”
“We anticipate getting all our students to appreciate their respective cultural heritages so that the traditions can continue for generations into the future.”
