Parents of Hagen Secondary School have contributed K200 each to build a new double classroom for the school.
Western Highlands’ assistant secretary Noks Kiap and Wai Rapa, the council president for Hagen Rural local level government and chairman of Wamp Nga Group of Companies, opened the building during the grade 12 graduation.
Kiap said many parents throughout the country expected government and schools to educate their children.
“Many want to take a free ride because of the free education policy, but what the parents of Hagen Secondary are doing is an eye-opener for other parents,” he said.
Kiap said that educating a child was a shared responsibility of parents, school and government.
Kiap said that parents who contributed the money to put up the building should be proud that the building would serve thousands of students in the future.
Rapa, whose daughter Jess Rapa was dux of social science, said Hagen Secondary was a top-performing school.
He said that such initiative taken by parents would help the school providequality education.
Rapa thanked principal John Mamb, teachers and board of governors for the good academic results.
