Funding for highway good news for Sandaun

The National, Wednesday October 30th, 2013

IT was a moment of joy when I read in The National that the Mai-Tadji Highway in West Sepik will receive direct funding from the national government next year.

The highway has been in a state of disrepair for donkey’s years.

It is a vital connection between inland Nuku and Lumi with Aitape on the coast.

Because of the non-existence of the road, it has made the journey by road to Aitape or Vanimo via Wewak costly, tiring and risky.

Despite that, nothing serious has been done to improve the horrendous condition of the road; except for cheap work which always falls apart under heavy use and bad weather conditions.

A good road is a basic bulding block for development to occur.

This road will not only make travelling to Aitape or Vanimo easier, but also provide an impetus for economic growth in  Sandaun.
