FUNDRAISING efforts by residents of Madang town last year have resulted in the building of a cervical cancer unit at the Modilon Hospital.
Hospital’s gynaecologist Doctor John Bolnga and Madang branch manager of Island Petroleum Sahin Das said the major fundraiser organised by the company was supported by businesshouses and town residents.
“We raised K41,528 during the 2017 Colour Run to build a cancer unit, and this is what we have now,” Das said.
Bolnga said the unit in the hospital had two examination rooms and a treatment room which would provide privacy and a user-friendly environment for women for checks and treatments.
“In the face of our country’s economic crisis, I am happy to say that this is what we can do without government support,” Bolnga said.
The Cervical Surveillance Clinic will need specialist nurses and experts to conduct tests and treat women who are at the “blown” stages.
“We have women coming in from Morobe, East and West Sepik and the highlands to get treatment,” he said.
“It shows that the clinic already has a long queue waiting to come in once everything is set.”
He said saving a woman “is equal to saving a household and a nation”.
“Women are strong contributors in any development. Programmes may fail us but women in most circumstances will not fail us,” Bolnga said.
