YUNI Wesleyan church in Hela is carrying out a fundraising drive and hosting Thanks Giving Day to raise funds to rebuild its church building destroyed by an earthquake.
The church which serves as a main centre for seven other churches around Hides gas project area within Petroleum Development License 1 in Komo/Margarima was destroyed during the 7.5 magnitude earthquake in 2018.
According to fundraising committee member Pastor Ipita Wagiyu, they plan to rebuild the new church by mid-year at the cost of K200,000.
The Yuni Wesleyan church was built by the BP Exploration Company in 1994 under its community service programme replacing an old semi-permanent building built in 1979 since the church first established.
“Since October, last year, we organised thanks giving day and raise funds to rebuild our church,” he said.
Wagiyu called on national church and churches in other provinces, developers operating in Hela and local MPs to offer their support.
He thanked Trans Wonderland Transport and Gigira Development Corporation for their support with cement bags and heavy machines to clear the land for the new building. Assistance can be given through Yuni Wesleyan Church account at BSP (Account number – 7001755938).
