Funds not from MPs’ pocket

Letters

I want to discourage the media from publishing government ministers’ and MPs’ presentations and announcements of granting funds to communities/ community projects/groups/charities and saying that the funds come from the ministers or MPs.
What a load of hogwash.
The funds do not come from them, far from it.
Yes, the funds in their custody like the – PSIP or DSIP or development grant money – belongs to the Government and these MPs and ministers only hand them out and can choose which body to give it out to.
But to say MP so-and-so gave K500,000 to the Highlands Mothers’ Group is wrong.
It actually gives one the perception that the money actually comes from the minister or MP’s pocket.
That’s not correct or true.
I’d love to see an MP or minister dig that deep into his pocket to fund development or a charity group.
If they do, they will not make another public appearance to give away his money.
All these ministers and MPs are doing us returning the people’s money to them when they put it into charity or development projects.
What would be correct by the media if it said ‘Goroka MP presented K200,000 to the Goroka Youth Club’ from the district improvement programme funds.
I would support that.
