Fuzzy Wuzzy Laula, 91, leaves behind lasting legacy on trail

Prime Minister Peter O’Neill, has expressed the nation’s sadness at the passing of Havala Laula, pictured, the last known Fuzzy Wuzzy Angel or carrier in the World War II.
“A national hero and an inspiration to the generations since, Laula passed away on Christmas Eve at the grand age of 91,” the Prime Minster said.
“The passing of Laula is a poignant and historic moment for both Papua New Guinea and Australia.
“This is the end of an era and the loss of an important human connection between the people of Papua New Guinea and Australia.
“During the World War II, as a teenager, Laula was one of so many of our people who stood up and risked their lives to save others.
“The passing of the last Fuzzy Wuzzy Angel must be commemorated in Papua New Guinea and Australia.
“I hope, as he said in his last interview, that we ensure the bond between PNG and Australia, formed during the World War II, continue in the hands of our children and grandchildren.”
