EDENE Gabbie, pictured, is one of the best backs in the Q-Cup with the Koiari native leading the several game statistics over the first three rounds.
The 24-year-old, who joined Wynnum Manly Seagulls this year after debuting in the Q-Cup last year, leads the competition in run metres (753m) with the closest Ipswich Jets’ Ben Shea with 637m.
Gabbie, who was at one stage contemplating returning to Port Moresby before the start of the 2019 season, also leads the Q-Cup in kick return metres (259m) and is seventh in all runs with 56.
Fellow Papua New Guinean and Jets wing Richard Pandia leads this statistic with 65 runs.
Gabbie’s Wynnum side are in fourth position on the ladder and the 180cm, 85kg fullback has played a role in his team’s fortunes using his pace and anticipation to be a valuable member of coach Adam Briedson’s roster.
And to think 12 months ago Gabbie was playing for the Dobo Warriors in the Port Moresby Rugby League competition.
He received his initial chance with the SP PNG Hunters last year and was by the middle of the season coach Michael Marum’s first choice in the No.1 jersey.
Gabbie went on to play for the PNG Prime Minister’s 13 in October before being signed by the Brisbane-based Seagulls.
