HOCKEY in Gabensis village along the Wau-Bulolo Highway, Morobe, is progressing well since it started early this year.

Since the sport was introduced to the area, many boys and girls, and young men and women have taken up the game.

However, the players lack proper sports equipment to train.

Lae City Hockey Association coordinator Mike Hebei has been promoting the game in Morobe.

Last week, PNG Hockey Federation president Kaluwin Potuan donated six balls, goalkeepers’ gloves and 20 hockey sticks through the Lae City Hockey Association to help the players in the village competition.

The sporting gear were delivered by the Lae City Hockey Association president Martin Raurela to the Gabensis officials during the week.

Gabensis Hockey president Joshua Ruben thanked the PNG Hockey Federation for the support.

Ruben assured the federation that the sport would grow and expand to the neighbouring villages.

As part of the Lae City Hockey Association’s assistance programme, junior boys and girls teams will travel to Gabensis village for friendly games.
