JOURNALISTS have been challenged to shift their attention from reporting on political issues to climate change and environmental issues.
Veteran journalist Titi Gabi told a group of journalist during their Sea Series fellowship induction lecture yesterday in Port Moresby to report more on environmental issues.
Gabi said political situations were often resolved and settled but climate change and environmental issues remained ongoing and affected everyone.
The annual Sea Series fellowship for journalists is hosted by Sea Web, a non-governmental organisation concerned with healthy oceans, with the series running from March to September.
It introduces journalists to marine life and the living ocean environment by featuring local experts and community leaders who discuss critical issues in managing Papua New Guinea’s marine resources.
Gabi said the role of a journalist was to make the world a better place by disseminating the most important commodity in the world – information.
She encouraged Sea Web to ensure the information delivered by lecturers was user-friendly for the journalists to understand in order to effectively deliver to the public.
Ten journalists and three student journalists from the University of Papua New Guinea will be attending.
The series will comprise 10 lectures to be held fortnightly and one field trip.
The journalists are expected to graduate in October.
