SKIPPER Yvonne Gabong, pictured, netted six goals to help Genesis beat Southern Conference cellar dwellers Amoana 8-0 in round eight of the Women’s National Soccer League in Port Moresby on Saturday.
The Papua New Guinea international opened the scoring with a first-half double as Amoana’s attempts on goal proved unsuccessful.
The Percy Mataio-coached side came back stronger after the break with Gabong scoring four more goals followed by a strike each by forwards Rumona Morris and Rayleen Bauelua.
Genesis are now four points ahead of second-placed Hekari United who drew 1-1 with Port Moresby City in the main match of the triple-header at PNG Football Stadium.
Genesis assistant coach Joe Willie said the second round of the season had made teams become unpredictable which showed in Amoana’s improved ball work and pressing.
“We were too complacent in the first half,” he told The National.
“But in the second half, we managed to get the team organised and they deliver according to what we focused on all week.
“The result showed the effort from the team.
“Their build-up was great but unfortunately, there were some goals that we didn’t score.
“However, we continued the momentum.”
Amoana goalkeeper Kila Vavine was impressive as she saved a number of attempts by Genesis.
Meanwhile, Hekari’s Bertha Yapi and City’s Fatima Rama were their side’s goalscorers.
“We didn’t play as a team and that let us down,” Hekari coach Eric Komeng said. “But we’ll work on our finishing and decision making ahead of our next match.”
