GAIRE village in the Central province launched its 2013 Gaire Sports & Social Association programme last week.

The launching started with a walk by all teams along the Gaire stretch of the Magi Highway displaying their colours, banners and war cries.  Five teams will participate in the games.

The programme ceased eight years ago but its return is a blessing for village youth.

Central Governor Kila Haoda encouraged the teams to build their community spirit in sport while recognising  the efforts of former Gaire sporting greats who represented the village and the country.

Haoda pledged K25,000 to the association and another K20,000 to the five teams.

Health Minister Michael Malabag also pledged K5,000.

Organisations that supplied advocacy materials at the launch included the PNG Business Coalition Against HIV & AIDS (BAHA), Coalition For Change PNG (CFCPNG) and the Narcotics Bureau, who donated K2,000 specifically to the Kiriu Rocks, one of the participating teams.

The teams are Nahua Waves, Kevaru Thunders, Bali Bears, Kiriu Rocks and Bore Panthers.
