PAPUA New Guinea’s longest running television firm, EMTV, will broadcast live all Under-20 women’s soccer World Cup matches.
EMTV bought the local rights to the world event from Fifa 11 months ago, proving their desire to make international tournaments available to local viewing audience.
The free-to-air broadcaster will relay the feed provided by Fifa’s host broadcast services to homes in PNG.
EMTV’s advantage over its competition is its free-to-air service which means any home that can pick up the signal will be able to watch Fifa U20 Womens’ World Cup matches without the need to pay extra in terms of decoders and other hardware as well as regular subscription payments.
The state-owned NBC (National Broadcasting Corporation) is the other free-to-air broadcaster while the other television company has built its viewership on a pay TV model. Even though the tournament is taking place in Port Moresby, all filming, logistics, audio visual and media, will be handled by HBS meaning EMTV will only be required to relay the feed nationally and distribute to other suppliers should it chose to do so.
The first day of the tournament is Sunday with the ir John Guise Stadium expected to take in a full house as hosts PNG take on South America’s top side Brazil in the second game (7pm) of the day.
The earlier fixture at the same venue will see Sweden and North Korea face off at 4pm.
A brief 10-minute show between the SJGS games has been scheduled to showcase the hosts country.
At Bava Park Stadium, Spain-Canada and Japan-Nigeria are the scheduled fixtures.
On the following day, at the National Football Stadium, Germany-Venezuela and Mexico-Korea are the two scheduled fixtures while at the PNG Football Stadium France-USA and Ghana-New Zealand are the two games listed.
EMTV currently has rugby league’s Four Nations tournament on its list of big events for the back end of 2016 while also showing Australia’s A League (soccer) and National Basketball League competition to viewers.
The official local radio broadcaster for the Fifa event is FM 100.
EMTV and FM 100 are companies owned by government-owned telecommunications firm Telikom PNG, who are one of three local sponsors for the Fifa U20 Women’s World Cup – the other two are Air Niugini and PNG Power Limited.
