Gang members arrested in failed robbery

WAU police have arrested three suspects who were allegedly involved in holding up a vehicle travelling from Lae.
The incident happened at about 11pm on Saturday near Wau.
Police station commander Allan Gualin said the trio, allegedly armed with a homemade gun and other weapons, attempted to hold up the vehicle and its occupants.
Gualin said quick intervention by a police patrol unit foiled the robbery and had the suspects arrested.
“The suspects are now detained at the Wau police station cells,” he said.
“We have recovered a homemade gun from them that was used in the robbery.
“We are waiting for the vehicle owner and the passengers to put an official complaint before we charge them.”
Gualin said the vehicle was a private one that was travelling from Lae to Wau with people and cargo.
Gualin warned travellers to be wary when travelling along the Bulolo Highway at night.
He said police were doing their best with the little resources they had to address law-and-order problems in Wau.
Gualin asked for cooperation from everyone.
He said all criminals arrested and charged by Wau police would be transported to Lae, about 200km away for court proceedings.
This is because there are no magistrates in Wau or neighbouring Bulolo.
