Garamuts come up short against Canada

The quarterfinals of the Under-19 Cricket World Cup ended in disappointment for Papua New Guinea (185 all out) as they were beaten by Canada (265/8) yesterday.
Canada captain Arslan Khan took the attack to the Gagamut bowlers with five boundaries in his 35.
Bowler James Tau claimed the wicket of opener Pravin Sharma (15). Canada were 40/2 after 9 overs and Sema Kamea and Tau did well to keep the Canadian run rate to just over 4 an over.
Akash Gill, who had earlier made history by becoming Canada’s first centurion at an U19 cricket World Cup, repeated the dose with a fine 120 before being dismissed in the 48th over and Canada eventually reached 265/8 in their allotted overs.
PNG’s run chase got off to a good start with openers Igo Mahuru (19) and Simon Atai (81) compiling the side’s first 50-run partnership of the tournament.
Atai would go on to top-score for the Garamuts but had little support from the rest of the order with Ovia Sam (23) being the other significant scorer. Papua New Guinea had a disastrous five-over period from the 38th to the 43rd when they lost a wicket in every over.
The Garamuts went from a healthy-looking 146/3 to 175/9.
Canada play the plate semifinals next while Papua New Guinea play their next match tomorrow.
