Gazelle make big statement with thumping of Defence in men’s softball

THE fifth round of the Port Moresby Men’s Softball Association season proper saw Gazelle make a bold statement with an 11-0 thumping of Defence in the main match on Sunday.
Both teams are among the top four after five rounds with Gazelle hitting a purple patch. Association president Ali Daveona said Gazelle’s win was surprising coming off a 1-1 draw with United Brothers last week.
The opening match saw Saints bounce back from a 0-1 loss to Defence last weekend as they edged the Brown Eagles 2-1. In the other matches, Bears mauled Mariners 10-1, Pawa zapped Stingerz 5-3 and Kikila Cats maintained their form with an 8-0 clipping of the Aviat Jets.
Daveona said Mariners had a luckless last two rounds coming up short at the plate before allowing Bears to build a big lead over the weekend and failing to register a point. “Mariners lost the game in the first two innings and came back stronger in the last two innings but Bears already had 10 runs on the board,” he said.
Daveona singled out Bears as the team to watch as they had returned some dominant results and were playing to a high standard.
He said Mariners and Stingerz were off the pace but were trying hard.
“These teams need to look at the drawing board and make improvements on their performances.”
